CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Vince escorted me up to my apartment with his arm around me most of the way. This time I wasn’t shy about leaning my head on his shoulder in the elevator. I asked him if he wanted to come inside for some of Julie’s lasagna, and he accepted.

We stepped inside and hung up our coats on the rack. I gently leaned my handbag against the wall so Red could climb out. It felt really good to be back home and even better to have some company. Although, I suspected that the main reason Vince decided to come in was because he wanted to hear the details about Trinity’s death.

Boy, sometimes it’s nice to be wrong.

I turned to walk toward the kitchen when Vince unexpectedly grabbed my left hand and pulled me off-balance into his embrace. A squeak escaped my mouth and my hands went to his chest to steady myself. The wheels in my head had to spin for a few moments before I fully realized his intentions. As he leaned down to kiss me, I slid my hands up his chest, around the back of his neck, and pulled gently to encourage our closeness. His lips were warm and moist, and all those butterflies that never seemed to leave my stomach caused my breath to catch. Our initial tentative kiss became deliciously passionate as the seconds ticked by. When our tongues finally met, the warmth that had begun down low in my body increased to a four-alarm fire almost instantly. Patty’s magic couldn’t hold a candle to this blaze. When the kiss finally ended, I leaned the side of my head against his chest and tried recover some semblance of composure.

Careful not to let my bare cheek touch his shirt, I snuggled my head against the swell of his chest, letting my hair act as a barrier. “Uh…wow. I seriously need to catch my breath.”

He stroked my head and chuckled. “Yeah.” Vince’s voice was deep, soft and almost breathless. “I’m finding that I have that same problem.”

I laughed against his chest.

Oh. My. God. My mind raced with images of Vince’s excellent skin rubbing strategically against mine, but, at the same time, a small voice was also whispering not to take things too fast. He was a co-worker, remember? Or, what about the old adage, ‘Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?’ Or all the countless advice columnists who always tell their readers to not jump into bed with a guy on the first date? Vince and I hadn’t even had a first date! On the other hand, most of those advice columnists weren’t skin-touch deprived individuals. It was over ten years, since I had last felt the touch of a man’s warm lips plainly against mine. Let’s face it—kissing through the fabric of a skin suit just doesn’t cut it.

After a moment, I pulled away and looked into his eyes. Now that some of the heat had dissipated, I took the opportunity to step back slightly from his body.
